What Is DDP Shipping from China? Costs, Process & When to Use It

Under DDP (Delivered Duty Paid), the seller arranges carriage and export, transit and import clearance to the agreed destination, and bears applicable duties and taxes. A forwarder may coordinate these tasks, but the contract must identify the responsible parties and import arrangement.
Delivery and risk transfer occur when the import-cleared goods are at the buyer's disposal at the agreed destination, on the arriving vehicle and ready for unloading. The buyer bears unloading risk; unloading costs may already be included in the carriage contract. A signature is not the general trigger for risk transfer.

How the process works, step by step
- •Your goods are collected from the supplier and brought to the forwarder's China warehouse

- •At destination, the forwarder's local partner clears customs and pays duties
- •The goods reach the agreed destination; the buyer takes delivery and arranges unloading under the agreed terms.
What DDP should cost (reference, 2026)
From China to the USA, DDP air runs roughly $7.50–9.50 per kg and DDP sea about $4.00–6.00 per kg, transit 25–35 days. To the UAE, DDP air starts near $6/kg. These are reference ranges — your rate depends on product, volume, pickup city and delivery address.
The honest part: how cheap DDP goes wrong
A low headline price is not enough to judge a DDP offer. Incorrect values or product declarations can lead to additional duties, penalties or seizure. Responsibility depends on local law and the actual roles of the seller, importer and customs representative; DDP does not shield any party from those requirements.
A proper DDP quote includes: properly classified HS codes, real declared values, duties actually paid, and every fee in writing. If a price looks impossibly cheap, ask the one question that filters everything:
- •"Can you show me the customs declaration and duty payment for a similar shipment you handled?"
Ask which declaration and duty-payment records you will receive, and request an available, appropriately redacted example. A sample helps explain the process but does not replace confirmation of the importer and documents for your own shipment.
When DDP is the right choice — and when it isn't
DDP can suit buyers who want one coordinated service when the seller can lawfully handle import clearance and the required documents can be provided. If local rules prevent the seller from clearing imports, DAP with an agreed buyer-side import arrangement may be more suitable. For sea or inland-waterway shipments, buyers arranging their own main carriage can also compare FOB. Choose by responsibilities and total cost, not by a universal recommendation.
